About Brown Dog Tick

The brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) occurs worldwide but it is relatively uncommon in New England. It is not normally found outdoors in NE, and those ticks found infesting dogs would likely be the American dog tick, or the Blacklegged tick (Lyme disease agent). Unlike these common ticks, the brown dog tick is unique in its ability to establish itself indoors infesting both homes and kennels. Although they are capable of transmitting disease, brown dog ticks do not readily bite humans. Still, for safety’s sake, brown dog tick extermination is recommended.
