About Lesser Grain Borer

Lesser Grain Borer (Rhyzopertha dominica) is another serious pest of stored grain. It occurs worldwide but is very common in North America. These small, (1/8in. long, brownish black) cylindrical shaped beetles belong to a family that commonly infests wood. The adult and grub-like larval stage each damage grain by feeding externally upon the kernel. Larva will bore into grain, consume the entire contents, and later emerge as an adult beetle. Lesser grain borer is primarily a pest in grain storage facilities, flour mills, and is not commonly found in the home.
