The Stinging Problem
Stinging insects are turning Massachusetts backyards into no-go zones.
Yellowjackets, bald-faced hornets, and paper wasps are extremely common across the state. By mid-to-late summer, a single nest can contain thousands of aggressive insects. One wrong step near a nest under your deck, in the ground, or along the eaves can lead to multiple painful stings — and serious reactions for anyone with allergies.
DIY sprays and “home remedies” often make things worse: incomplete kills cause the colony to relocate or become even more defensive, and you risk getting swarmed.

Common Stinging Insects in Massachusetts
Yellowjackets: Black and yellow, highly aggressive near nests. Often build in ground burrows, wall voids, or attics. Attracted to BBQs, drinks, and sweets. Can sting repeatedly.
Bald-Faced Hornets: Black with white markings on the face. Build large, enclosed “football” paper nests in trees, shrubs, or under eaves. Extremely defensive and will pursue threats.
Paper Wasps: Slender bodies with long dangling legs. Build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, railings, or porch ceilings. Less aggressive than yellowjackets but will sting if the nest is disturbed.
Carpenter Bees: Large bees that drill perfectly round holes in wood (soffits, decks, fences). Can cause structural damage over time and sting if provoked.
