About Silverfish

Silverfish are small, (⅓ to ½ inch) wingless insects with elongated flattened bodies that are covered in silvery gray scales. Their long antennae and three prominent appendages at the posterior also help distinguish them from other insects. Silverfish can be found almost anywhere in the home, but prefer areas with high humidity such as basements, washrooms, and also attics. One related species, known as a firebrat (Thermobia domestica), lives exclusively in areas of the home with high temperatures such as boilers, furnaces, and water heaters. Silverfish and firebrats feed upon starch and may damage sized paper, fabrics, wallpaper, and book bindings. These long-lived insects (up to several years by some accounts) are mostly a nuisance to homeowners, but can be serious pests in bakeries, libraries, and museums.
