Chester may be a relatively small town in southern New Hampshire, but it’s got a rich history in the Bell family and politics.
Lawyer Samuel Bell, who served as the 8thgovernor of New Hampshire from 1819 to 1823, was a resident of Chester. His brother, John Bell, also served as governor in 1828. John Bell’s son, Charles Bell, served as the 38thgovernor of New Hampshire, and Samuel Newell Bell, grandson of Samuel Bell, served as a United States Representative in the late 1800s.
