In the mid-1800s, West Roxbury was home to an experimental community called Brook Farm. It was founded as a utopian society, and everyone who lived these was allowed to choose whatever work they liked, and there was an overarching policy of balancing work time and leisure time. Brook Farm was a complete failure, but many who participated in it called it a positive experience.
Since 1994, West Roxbury has been home to the Corrib Classic 5K Road Race. Originally a small-scale affair that drew around 200 runners, today it brings in more than 2,000 participants, and the money raised goes to various local charities.
