About a hundred years after the English began settling in the area now known as Massachusetts, they built a dock on Sandy Bay, and that was the beginning of Rockport. In 1856, women of the town became upset with male residents drinking “demon’s rum” all day instead of fishing or working in the quarries. In response, the women vowed to destroy all the alcohol in the town. From that point on, through the nation’s experiment with alcohol prohibition and all the way into 2005, alcohol was not allowed in Rockport. In spite of that rule, the town still thrived as a cultural and tourism center.
