Q. I’ve seen several ads for these ultrasonic pest repellers that you plug into an electrical outlet to rid your home of cockroaches, mice, and everything else. Do these things work?
VIEW MOREEveryone likes beetles. Kids are always collecting and playing with beetles. Did you know that lightning bugs, also called fire flies, are neither bugs nor flies, but are actually beetles? Beetles aren’t usually scary and we don’t worry about them biting or stinging us, so beetles are kind of fun and very interesting.
VIEW MOREQ. We had a carpenter ant problem. The pest control technician who treated our home said that carpenter ants are usually associated with moisture problems in your home but he didn’t tell us where to look for moisture problems. How do we know if we have moisture problems that could attract pests?
VIEW MOREQ. We have a small farm with a little smokehouse out back and we have some hams hanging there. When I went in there yesterday, I saw several insects crawling on the hams. They look like beetles, mostly black with yellow across the center. I tried to look them up on the Internet and the closest I could come was larder beetles. Shouldn’t larder beetles be in a kitchen?
VIEW MOREMothballs, moth crystals, or moth cakes are an age-old remedy for getting rid of everything from moths, to cockroaches, to squirrels in the attic. But do mothballs really work to repel animals from an area?
VIEW MOREQ. My son caught this really strange looking insect. He has it inside a jar. He thinks it’s really cool because it kind of looks like a miniature dinosaur. It’s more than an inch long, kind of grayish, and has a hump on its back with a row of spines. I told him not to touch it in case it bites. He wants to take it into school for science class. Any idea what it is?

Q. My daughter was just told by a doctor that she has scabies in her skin which is caused by a mite. Can you treat our home for mites? I don’t know where the mites came from but I’m worried that the rest of us might get scabies too .

Q. I have a lot of these same spiders in my house. They’re roundish and light brown and their webs are all over. I keep destroying the webs that I can reach but it seems like they’re back in no time. Do you know what kind of spider this is?
