Is Spring Yard Cleanup On Your Mind?

Mulch and dense foliage can trap moisture, which insects love.

Are you starting to think of spring cleaning around your property? Maybe not with this winter we’ve had! But, those of us in the pest control business know that, no matter what, the pests will still show up pretty much on schedule. Hard to believe that in less than a month, we’ll be getting the first phone calls about swarming termites.

People worry about keeping pests out of their homes, but they don’t give enough thought to conditions on the outside of their home or right next to their home that are hiding or encouraging pests…the same pests that will find their way inside. Probably the number one factor that encourages pests around our homes is excess moisture. That doesn’t just mean obvious puddles of water, it includes plants, mulch, and piles of debris that hold in the dampness that pests love.

Don’t Overlook These Potential Problem Areas

BASF Pest Control Solutions offers this list of items around your home that should receive your attention before pest season begins in force:

  • Skylights and chimneys are often associated with moisture problems that may lead to pest problems.
  • Tree stumps often harbor termites, carpenter ants, beetles, and other common pests.
  • Garbage areas provide food for many common pests. Make sure your containers have tight-fitting lids.
  • Decks often trap leaf litter and other clutter and provide cover which supports many pests.
  • Gutters in disrepair lead to moisture conditions which attract pests.
  • Downspouts and leaky spigots may provide water needed by pests.
  • Eaves, vents, and shutters are common places to find stinging insect nests.
  • Thick foliage provides cover and traps dampness which attracts pests.
  • Mulch beds (especially thick, old mulch) are attractive to many types of insects.
  • Ivy and other vines on your home provide hiding places and easy access into your home for pests.

Don’t Forget the Preventative Barrier Treatment

As part of your spring cleanup, consider an exterior preventative pesticide treatment. At Colonial Pest, our Preventative Maintenance Program has become the backbone of our business. When you’re part of the Program, you receive two scheduled pest barrier treatments per year, and more service if you need it, usually for no additional charge. These treatments control the pests on the outside, before they can get inside. Give us a call and make Colonial Pest part of your spring cleanup plan!
