Harvard is a small rural community with a population of 5000. It was incorporated in 1732 and is famous for a series of unusual sociological and religious movements, such as the Shakers and Transcendentalists. The Shaker movement was carried out by Mother Ann Lee who founded the Shaker Village, which still exists to this day. The transcendentalists were founded by Bronson Alcott in 1843. Alcott and his family attempted to create a utopian society on their farm, known as the Fruitlands. Today Fruitlands is a museum that educates visitors on Transcendentalists, Shakers, and colonial life.
