The Asian lady beetle (a multi-colored/patterned beetle) is native to Asia but now occurs throughout most of the United States. So, just how did it arrive here? Was it a biology experiment gone awry or a covert invasion of the port of New Orleans? Apparently, its establishment in the U.S. is a result of both intentional releases by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and stowaways arriving in ships at major ports. Lady beetles (including the Asian type) feed on plant pests and are generally regarded as beneficial. But the Asian lady beetle’s (Harmonia axyridis) habit of over wintering in homes (often in large numbers) makes this insect a nuisance for many. Until just recently, the only approved control measures for lady beetles were prevention by exclusion (sealing and caulking entry points) and vacuuming to remove them from living areas – Asian lady beetle extermination was not sanctioned. However, published reports of allergic reactions (including asthma) in some individuals have brought about changes in the law to allow chemical control of these insects.
